Some Caveats & Explanations
FIRST: to those who are not members of my family, be forewarned. There are references to events, people, situations, & places you don’t understand. That is because this history is written primarily to and for my five adult children, Julie, Nancy, Lisa, Tom and Nathan. After wrestlling with the editorial problem of point-of-view, i.e. "Who is my target audience?", I decided the audience was those five people. That simplified my writing, but it created a few wrinkles, comments in the text that depend for comprehension on first-hand experience or insider's information. Only these five people share such with me. My apologies if that is disconcerting. I believe, however, that you will be rewarded. In return, you will enjoy the experience of reading someone's personal letters, as it were, because this history is basically a story I tell to and for my children.
SECOND: Forgive the roughness of the text. This is a "work in progress" posted now, so that others can view is sooner rather than later. The roughness stems from two sources: (A) unpolished writing, and (B) typographical errors. My defense is expediency. If I were to solve both before posting this, I would need to invest as much time as I spent getting to this point. I am no spring chicken. While my oldest uncle lived to 101, I can't count on it.
THIRD: this website contains my opinions in general and my “view of the Universe: in particular. By that I refer to the peculiar fact that two objective, intelligent, dispassionate, unbiased people who view an event at the same time will remember the “facts” differently later. Both will feel that the other is “wrong”. My apologies if that occurs. I do not intend to malign, nor do I intend to distort. But the memories inside my gourd are there and constitute my reality. Where they differ from yours, accept your.
FOURTH, The Legalese, the fine print, sort of stuff, about the copious images in this history. Many are from personal records, others are from my parents, still others are from relatives. No problem there. Others were purchased from university libraries and I cite their source. No problem there, either. The rest have been mined from the internet, thank you Google. Those are the ones that concern me. I don't know Internet copyright laws. I do not wish to violate them or be accused of plagiarism, of unlawful use of the work of others. I list URLs to acknowledge the sources and owners. The problem is that I don't know if citing URL's satisfies my obligations and protects me from complaints. I trust it does, so venture to place this history out there for you.
FIFTH: What is the purpose of this history? I write this to, first, give myself insight about where I came from, second, to allow me to review what I have done, third, to see how it affected my children, and fourth, to provide them information about their antecedents and childhood. This gives them -and me- a chance to talk about things while I am still hanging around.
FINALLY: "Uphill Both Ways" is my bequest to Nathan, Tom, Lisa, Nancy and Julie. It is a palpable gift of "me". They will be able to literally hold "me" after I'm pushing up daisies along side my pater, good ol' James A, aka "Dinosaur Jim".
